NEWS &VIEWS 2-17-00
By NM Leland Fuerstman
Wendy's XI Complete; Newton Captures 6th Title.
Wendy's XII Yields Top Board Draws
A rather
paltry turnout of only 26 burned- out chessplayers, and one
distinguished
visitor, congregated at our "revered temple of chess" more commonly
known as Wendy's on Wednesday evening in order to complete in Rd:2 of Wendy's
XII.
NM Leland Fuerstman's aggressive but dubious attempt at winning a Drawn
pawn ending in his Rd:5 adjournment versus NM Daniel Liu
ended,
as one might expect, in the latter player's favor thus allowing
Expert William F. "Frankie the Gladiator" Newton II (2161)
(whose only loss was to Fuerstman in Rd:2) to win clear 1st Place
in Wendy's
XI with 4-1.
CCC members were
honored by the visit of out-of-towner Michael Lipkin,
son of North Carolina chess icon Dr. Al Lipkin (founder of
the LPO!) Said Michael, "I can't believe you can get this many chessplayers
together on a Wednesday night!?"
In the Top
Section
of Wendy's XII, NM Leland Fuerstman (2041) agreed
to a 9 move Draw (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 Nc3 Nc6 4 d4 d5!? 5 ed Nd5 6 Nd5
Qd5 7 Be3 cd 8 Nd4 Nd4 9 Qd4 Qd4=) with Frankie "the Gladiator"
Newton (2161) while
NM Daniel "Deep" Liu (2000) and 16 year
old phenom Expert Justin Daniel (2022) responded in kind. Shortly
thereafter, NM Garrick "Outlaw" Wells (2242) surrendered the half-point
to Greg "Hornblower" Hall (1821)
who has nicked his second Master for a Draw in as many weeks having
done the same to NM Daniel Liu (2000) in Rd:1! With David Jaap (1800) adjourning
vs. Patrick McCartney (1819), the only Top Section player
to log in a win was Gary Newsom (1913) who survived a lively Benko
Gambit against returnee to competition CCC Original Member Jon F.
Pietras (1850). In the Middle Section, Paul "Shuttleman"
Calloway (1661) stopped Slobodan Sinanovich (Unr) while Alphonse"Amazing
Al" Ashamalla (1300) impressed
the crowd once again with a decisive upset over Mike Isner (1498).
In addition, Carl McKern (1522) and Jerome "Bouncer" DeBell (1617) divided
the point. In the Lower Section, Brandon Brown (1164)
and Samuel Christopher (1044) lead with 2-0. Other Lower Section
winners were Joe Feiler (See Game
0097) All results may be viewed in "Current
Crosstable."
Newton Draws GM Shabalov (2623), Crushes IM
Sevillano (2547) at Land of the Sky!
A roar of
applause and cheers filled the room as "the Gladiator" entered...for,
he had once again, proven himself in battle, "beyond the call of duty."
This time, William F. Frankie "the Gladiator" Newton II (2188) asked
no quarter and yielded none after employing the "Swiss Gambit" in Rd:1
of the Land of the Sky. In Rd:2 he handily defeated
Jeffery Pennig (1947) and was thusly paired with one of the highest rated
active players in the U.S., International Grandmaster Alex Shabalov
(2623) whom he Drew! (See Game 0094)Round
4 saw "the Gladiator" at his best as he crushed
International
Master Enrico Sevillano (2547) in an exciting game.(See
Game 0095) In the final round, our hero, battered,
bruised and exhausted from his previous encounters could no longer thrust
his sword and fell honorably to National Master Larry Tapper (2321).
Still, a fantastic result against a very strong field of players.
Also, in the Top Section,
Justin Daniel scored 2.5-2.5.
In the Under 2000 Section,
Michael Curcuru was 2nd-4th
with 4.5-.5 while Paul "Shuttleman" Calloway finished in
the money with 3.5-1.5 posting wins over J. Fred Wilson, Patrick McCartney
and Tim Bond. Patrick McCartney scored 3-2 while Don
"Sky"
Hofer
posted an equal score. Andras Bader went 2-3 and "Iron"
Mike Eberhardinger went .5-3.5. In the
Under
1600
Section,
Jerome
"Bouncer"
DeBell scored 3-2 while
Spencer Singleton, Terry Brown, Nick Bambara
and Brandon Brown went 2-3. "Amazing"
Al Ashamalla slipped
a bit with 1-4. In the
Under 1200 Section, Michael
"You
Know You Make Me Wanna" Shoup scored 3.5-1.5. In the Speed
Chess
Tournament,
Brandon
Brown tied for 1st in the Under
1600 with 5-5. A more
detailed narrative of this event may be viewed on our CCC Message
Board.
Liu Captures Denny's A-1 Title; Dr. Sztyber Performs
Surgery on Lower Section
A dozen
of the Metrolina area's most competitive chessplayers installed
chains on their tires, caravaned to Ft. Mill, SC, and participated
in Denny's A-1 on Super Bowl Saturday! In the Top
Section,
NM
Daniel Liu (2000) pocketed $60 after having dispatched of David Jaap
(1821) and Gary Newsom (1914) before drawing his final round against Patrick
McCartney (1783). (See Game 0089) Equal
2nd-3rd winning $15 each were Gary Newsom
(1914) and Patrick
McCartney (1783) who each score 2-1. In the Lower Section,
Dr.
Gerard
Sztyber (1513), after having driven all the way from Alabama, preformed
various procedures on Don Norwood, Mike Isner, and Rob Morse to score a
perfect 3-0 and carry home $60 (Please give Governor Wallace my regards...)
Equal
2nd-3rd with 2-1 and winning $15 were Jerome DeBell and Rob Morse.
(Our next 3-round Saturday tournament will be held at "The Ole Smokehouse
Dining Room" on Montford Dr. (Off Park. Rd.) on Feb. 26). Fuerstman
directed.
